GitHub Copilot switches to AI Credits, token-based billing on June 1

GitHub Copilot will switch all plans to token-based, usage billing with AI Credits on June 1, 2026.

Per GitHub’s announcement, Copilot plans move from premium requests to AI Credits billed on token consumption (input, output, and cached) across models, with a preview bill arriving in early May to estimate costs before the cutover details.

Base plan prices stay the same, code completions and Next Edit don’t burn credits, fallback models go away, and Copilot code review will also consume GitHub Actions minutes in addition to credits post.

[ WHY_IT_MATTERS ]
01.

Spend will now mirror token burn, which can spike with agentic sessions and repo-wide edits.

02.

Fallback is gone and code review also uses GitHub Actions minutes, so you’ll need budgets and guardrails.

[ WHAT_TO_TEST ]
  • terminal

Use the preview bill in early May to baseline token burn for chat, agents, and code review under normal team workloads.

  • terminal

Set org-level credit caps and simulate exhaustion to verify developer experience, alerts, and continuity plans.

Legacy codebase integration strategies...

  • 01.

Map current PRU-heavy teams to expected token usage and adjust budgets; remove reliance on fallback models.

  • 02.

Update CI budgets because Copilot code review now also consumes GitHub Actions minutes; ensure runners/quotas won’t throttle pipelines.

[ GREENFIELD_PERSPECTIVE ]

Fresh architecture paradigms...

  • 01.

Design flows to use free completions for routine edits and reserve credits for chat, agents, and code review.

  • 02.

Establish monitoring from day one via the Billing Overview and preview bill to track burn and catch regressions.
